I think it is as important to look at the big financial picture as it is to look at small savings--ie are you getting the best return on checking, savings, cds, car insurance. You can save a lot by looking at the big picture

My thriftiest tip is simple: Don't buy anything on impulse. Plan your meals, your trips, your major purchases. It ALL adds up.

Chitra said...

Combine eQ, MQ and IAQ at your local stores (like Safeway and Frys)to save the most and don't stockpile food items that will go bad or that are not used frequently.

A great tip that I was shared with me and I have used since is only using 1 Tbsp of detergent for washing clothes, 1 tsp of softener and 1/2 of a dryer sheet! I'm amazed at how my clothes come out just as before, and at how long these products are lasting us now!

We've started planning our meals a month in advance. I know EXACTLY what to buy at the store and don't deviate from that list. We are also less likely to eat out because of it. It eliminates the "There's nothing to eat" excuse.

I'm not afraid to stack as many things as possible to lower my OOP - a really good sale/clearance, MQ's and store coupons, EQ's, rebates, RR's/ECB's, gift cards, price-matching at Target or Walmart, or using competitor coupons at stores who take them (like Fry's). You name it, if it's legitimate, and it's possible, I go for it. I also combine clearance sales with % off coupons for things like clothing and household items, and use promotions, surveys, and coupons to save money when we eat out. These days, every penny counts, and it pays to make your money work for you. I typically can save 75-90% on almost anything, with not a lot of effort. Thanks for your awesome blog, and keep sharing the deal love!!! :)

Make your own -- it's often cost-effective and saves money. For instance, we go through gallons of unsweetened iced tea and brew our own. It would cost megabucks to buy in the store. *Thanks* for the giveaway!

My thrifty tip is to menu plan. Planning our week's menu around sales and what I have on hand saves me time and money. Time because I am not trying to figure out what to cook each day when I get home from work and money, because I am not running to the store on the way home in order to pick up something for dinner.

Always be on the look out for ways to save, it's amazing what your eyes catch when you are pretty much anywhere. I also run my fans in my house rather then turn town my AC--energy efficient, and hang my clothes instead of drying them. That alone has cut out SRP bill by at least $20.
